Filmmaking Tools / Setup

The gear I use for all of my videos. This page is always being kept up to date. Keep coming back regularly to see any updates to this setup.

For video I shoot in S-Log-3 with S-Gamut3.Cine as my picture profile. I typically film at my camera's Base ISO - for the Sony A7IV/FX30 it's typically 800/3200 or 2500 max on the FX30.

If you’re interested in what LUTS I use for my videos you can find some free and paid download on my Patreon.

I've linked all of my gear below but it's ever changing. That being said I've had my A7IV setup for almost 5 years now.

The color grading LUTs I use for all my footage. They work across all cameras and profiles. I personally usually use the Sony FX3 or Sony A7cII and the LUT pack includes conversion LUTs as well for just about every major camera company. Easy to apply and result in a vibrant and dense filmic look that's very pleasing.

Cameras

My main A-cam for anything high-end. Compact enough for solo work, but full-size features when I need them. I love how clean the footage looks straight out of camera — love having the 3200 paired with a F 1.4 lens — my LUTS were designed to work with the A7IV, A7SIII, FX3, FX30, a6700, ZVE-10 II & ZV-E1

My main B-cam for anything high-end. Compact enough for solo work, even with the smaller sensor I find it super easy to match to my A7IV. I love how clean the footage looks straight out of camera — it's nice to have ISO 2500 as well — my LUTS were designed to work with the A7IV, A7SIII, FX3, FX30, a6700, ZVE-10 II & ZV-E1

Perfect for BTS, POV shots, on a chest mount. Surprisingly cinematic and big sensor size for what it is. The gimbal is incredible for stabilization and tracking as well.

Lenses

The lens that lives on my camera the most. Incredibly sharp, works in almost every situation. If I had to shoot everything on one lens, this would probably be it.

Great first versatile wide lens to buy. Great for creative shots, interiors, or making small spaces feel larger. I love this for my vertical content - the wide field of view paired with the autofocus makes this lens an absolute necessity to have in your kit.

My favourite combo of focal length (85mm) and aperture (1.4). Amazing for video or photo portrait work. Fairly lightweight, very sharp, and pairs well with an 1/8 pro mist filter. Optically might be my best lens.

Used mostly for photography portraits. Can be found very cheap used $425 USD. The sharpness is incredible but there is a bit of chromatic aberration, though this can be fixed in Lightroom easily. It’s a perfect pairing if you're shooting events on a separate body with an 85mm.

Great character lens under $100 when adapted to e-mount. One of my favourite lenses for getting a different look a feel. Vintage lenses have a distinct look for cheap that is hard to completely mimic in post.

One of the best compact wide zooms for Sony. It’s small but incredibly reliable for vlogging or tight spaces. APS-C lens but works on my full frame setup with a slight vignette that actually looks cool.

Audio

Rode Video Mic NTG – Lightweight mic I use for run-and-gun setups. Plugs straight into the camera — minimal hassle. Great for quick interviews or BTS audio.

Rode Pod Mic – Studio mic I use for VO. good cheap option that sounds awesome. The sound is full and warm, especially paired with a the scarlet interface and a foam cover.

Focusrite 2i2 Solo – Audio interface for the Rode Pod Mic. Clean signal and super portable. It's simple, reliable, and does exactly what I need.

Rode Wireless PRO – My go-to wireless lav. Internal recording saves me when I forget to hit record on cam. Range is great, and audio stays consistent even in busy locations.

DJI Mic Mini – Tiny, lightweight, and super straightforward. I use this when I want clean audio without dealing with menus or setup time. It’s ideal for BTS when I am doing a street shoot and my Osmo Pocket 3. Set it and forget it and it does the trick!

Lighting

Amaran 100D – Studio light I use to key nearly everything. I use it for all my studio A-Roll content with a grid diffuser that i'll link below.

Godox Octa Softbox – Has an attachable velcro grid to help contain the spill of light — super versatile but takes up a decent amount of space. As it is a bigger source for light it makes skin look very soft and natural. It's the 37.4" with Bowens Speed Ring.

NANLITE Pavo Tube II 6C – Battery powered portable light I throw into the background or use as a constant video light at wedding receptions. Easy to color match and has some cool preset modes.

Godox TT685II-S – Be mindful to buy the version for your brand of camera — I use for events to bounce light or with a diffuser. Can get fun with light painting at slow shutter speeds.

Godox iT30Pro F – Budget flash option for you camera with a built in battery and diffuser. A must have flash if I want more out of my Fuji XT-30.

Tripods and Rigging Gear

Smallrig Cage – Have my A7IV basically always housed in this. Allows me to mount my monitor, top and side handles as well as mics.

C-Stand – My rig for overhead and tabletop shots. Helps stabilize top-down content and lets me mount extra gear. It’s solid and doesn’t drift mid-take.

Freewell Tripod – My main tripod for all of my cameras. Lightweight for travel and even serves as a hiking pole!

Freewell Locking Variable ND System – Magnetic ND system I use on most lenses. Snaps on quickly and lets me dial in exposure fast. I’ve stopped using variable rings because this is just faster.

DJI RS3 Mini – My favorite gimbal to date. Strong, reliable, and it's quick lock function has saved me soooo much time over the years.

Wandrd PRVKE 31L - My travel and camera backpack of choice. Been using for years and they have a lifetime warranty. They've already replaced two of my bags and upgraded me to the latest one.
